Recognition as a Nation
On March 3, 1837, President Jackson granted official recognition of Texas.
France extended recognition on September 25, 1839 and a commercial treaty was negotiated.
One year later both Great Britain and the Netherlands recognized Texas.

Wants Texas to be its own nation.

Santa Fe Expedition

Anson Jones Wins!
Anson Jones, who had been elected president of Texas in 1844.
He calls a special session to consider the terms of Annexation, which was quickly accepted.

Texas becomes the 28 state!
On February 28, 1845 congress passed a joint resolution to approve the annexation of Texas.
Texas could enter the union as soon as its people approved annexation and adopted the state Constitution.
Texas kept its public land, but could sell some to pay its debts.

On December 29, 1845 president Polk signed the resolution that made Texas a state.
In May 1845, Mexico agreed to recognize Texas independence, only if they refused annexation by the U.S.
Texas rejected the proposal, and on February 19, 1846, President Anson Jones turned the government over to the U.S. and the first governor of Texas, James Pinckney Henderson
Texas officially became the 28th state in the union.
