Describing and Giving the Value of Numbers Expressed in Exponential Notation

by NENITA COLASITO

2

What do you mean by base?

3

The base is to be multiplied by itself.

4

An exponent tells how many times the base is used as a factor to form the product. It is written at the right side above the number (base).

5

What do you mean by exponentiation?

6

The process of repeated multiplication.

f. Is he correct, that he has 33 marbles in all? Why?

14

Solution:

  We write 3 decks with 4 in each as 3

or 3 X 3 X 3 X 3

         3⁴ = 81     or      3 X 3 X 3 X 3 = 81

             So, 81 + 6 = 87 marbles in all
