Standard

MGSE6.NS.8 Solve real-world and mathematical problems by graphing points in all four quadrants of the coordinate plane. Include use of coordinates and absolute value to find distances between points with the same first coordinate or the same second coordinate.

4

Learning Targets

  • I can explain the distance between 2 coordinates in the context of a problem.

  • I can graph points to solve problems.

5

Vocabulary

Coordinate Plane

x-axis

y-axis

ordered pair

quadrant

6

Guiding Question/Essential Question

How do you graph numbers on a coordinate plane?

How do you find the distance between two points on a coordinate plane?

8

Properties of the Coordinate Plane

  • A coordinate plane is formed by the intersection of a horizontal number line called the x-axis and a vertical number line called the y-axis.

  • The two axes (plural for axis) intersect vertically at a point called the origin of the coordinate plane.

  • The axes also divide the coordinate plane into four regions called quadrants.

  • The location of a point is given as an ordered pair of numbers, (x1, y1).

The x-axis is a horizontal number line.

The y-axis is a vertical number line.

Together, they allow you to locate points in two-dimensions!!!!
