Component 5 Revision

Part 1

Energy transfers, saving energy, efficiency, fossil and renewable energy

We will complete the Entry level certificate this week after doing some revision. make notes on paper not your books.

2

Draw

draw the symbol for the type of ionising radiation that is stopped by paper of 5cm of air?

3

Making energy useful

Some Important points:

  • Energy cannot be created or destroyed, only converted from one form to another.

  • Energy can only be measured when it is transforming from one form to another.

  • Energy is measured in joules or multiples of joules (kJ, kilojoules, MJ, megajoules).

  • The total energy in the universe is constant, how the energy is arranged changes.

4

Storing energy

Energy can be stored in a number of ways.

as chemical potential.

  • in fuels (like coal, oil or natural gas)

  • in reactive chemicals (like explosives, or even batteries)

  • in foods.

Energy can be stored by objects lifted against gravity store Gravitational Potential Energy (GPE).

Energy is also stored in stretch and compressed objects as Elastic Potential.

media

Magnetism and nuclear energy are also ways to store energy. These are not really covered in this qualification.

5

Useful energy transfers

Energy is needed to cause any change. When stored energy does work some energy is wasted. The wasted energy is often as heat but could be in any form that is not wanted.

The smaller the amount of wasted energy the more efficient.

On your document find the equation for calculating

Multiple Choice

A petrol car uses fuel in order to move, the useful energy transfer is...

1

kinetic --> chemical

2

chemical --> kinetic

3

chemical --> sound

4

chemical --> heat

7

Multiple Choice

What is required to cause changes or to 'do work'

1

A positive attitude

8

Saving energy

Whenever energy transfers some of the energy is wasted.

Most often the wasted energy is heat. Heat is caused when moving objects cause friction between the surfaces.

Saving energy, saves resources and money.

Forces

A force is a push or pull.

Forces are classified as contact forces, these are forces like pushes, pulls or friction. when objects are touching.

Non contact forces are like magnetism or gravity, forces that act without objects touching,

media

Work is done (a type of mechanical energy) when a force moves an object.

W.d.(J) = force (N) x distance (m)
