​Percents are just ratios out of 100

​What can be tricky is figuring out the part vs. the whole:

​Sometimes our only clues are small words with a lot of meaning!

Which ratio pair shows: 9 is 75% of 12

• $$\frac{12}{75}=\frac{9}{100}$$

TAX, TIP and DISCOUNT​

​Taxes and tips are ADDED onto an amount owed.

​In other words, you pay more than 100%

​Discounts and coupons are a percent off or SUBTRACTED from an amount owed.

​In other words, you pay less than 100%

​If you need to pay a 10% tip or tax on a $20 bill:

​$20 = 100% of the bill

​

​10% is in addition to the bill

​

​Therefore, you are paying 100% + 10% = 110%

​If there is a discount of 40% on your purchase of $200:

​$200 = 100% of the bill

​

​40% is subtracted from the bill

​

​Therefore, you are paying 100% - 40% = 60%
