Intro to Verbs

​A verb is a word that expresses an action or a state of being.

• ​Verbs have five properties🡪 person, number, tense, voice, and mood

  • Person🡪 the subject from the speaker’s point of view

    • First 🡪 I, we

    • Second 🡪 you

    • Third 🡪 he, she, it, they

• Number🡪 the number of things performing the action or state of being

  • Singular🡪 one

    • Ex. He walks to school.

  • Plural🡪 more than one

    • Ex. They walk to school.

• ​Tense🡪 the time the action or state of being took, takes, or will take place

  • There are three main tenses:

  • Past🡪 took place in the past

    • Ex. We ate waffles for breakfast this morning.

  • Present🡪 is taking place now

    • Ex. He lives in New York City.

  • Future🡪 will take place in the future

    • Ex. I will go to the mall tomorrow.

• Voice🡪 whether the subject performs or receives the action

  • Active voice🡪 the subject performs the action in the sentence

    • Ex. Mary wrote the book.

  • Passive voice🡪 the subject receives the action in the sentence

    • Ex. The book was written by Mary.

• Mood🡪 indicates the attitude of the speaker
