When writing an essay, one of the ways to organize your thoughts is by making an outline. For compare and contrast essays, there are two types of outlines. 1. Block method and; 2.point by point outlining

media

To help you better understand compare and contrast essays, here are some guidelines for writing such essays:

1. Choose two items or concepts that are comparable to each other. In other words, a sensible and logical relationship is evident between the two.

2. Decide on your central idea or your thesis statement that serves as the framework of your essay.

9

media

3. Think about the purpose of writing the essay. Try to ask yourself these questions:

● Do you want to elaborate an unclear concept?

● Do you have new insights about the topic?

● Do you intend to prove that one is better than the other?

Guide Questions:

2. What are the similarities between the tiger and the lion?

3. What are the differences between the tiger and the lion?

4. Which between the lion and the tiger are you more familiar with? Why?

5. If you are going to change the title of the essay, what would it be? Explain your answer.

Tigers and lions are known as the kings, the leaders, the bravest, or the fiercest in the jungle. They are predators that hunt for food, which is why they are avoided by humans and other animals. However, despite threats to their safety, scientists have continued to make studies about them. These studies have established that tigers and lions have similarities, but they also differ in a lot of things including their appearance and the way they hunt their prey.

The Tigers and the Lions: Fiercest of the Fierce

media

The lions and tigers are both members of the family Felidae. Although they come from the same family, they have a different appearance. Tigers have bold and black stripes across their bodies, while lions do not have any of them. Tigers do not have manes, while male lions have a mane around their faces. Other physical characteristics of a tiger include being longer, more muscular, and generally heavier than lions. They have stronger legs and are more active. Meanwhile, when it comes to height, lions are taller than tigers.

13

There is also a considerable difference in the way these animals hunt for prey. The lion is a social animal and could always be spotted hunting in prides, while tigers are often solitary and could always be spotted hunting alone. The tiger is used to fighting one on one and is a more brutal and fast fighter. The lion needs a pride to hunt larger animals. Often, the lion does not get serious at the start of a hunt and would often resort to intimidation and wrestling before fighting. On the other hand, the tiger goes to a fight with everything at stake.

Lions and tigers are both interesting mammals that are commonly portrayed in media as strong creatures. They have been the subject of so many studies for scientists and other people who are interested in wildlife. These two creatures are similar to each other, but they also have so many differences.

ASSIGNMENT

Make an outline of the short text below.

My sister and I are twins. My mother tells us that we only look alike, but we have different attitudes.

I am more outgoing and I love sports. I’ve also convinced our mom to enroll me in a dancing school, for I really love dancing. Someday, I want to win an international award for being a good dancer.

On the other hand, my twin prefers solitary activities more. She loves drawing and painting. She is always with her sketch pad, and she loves traveling because she finds new things to draw in every place she visits.

My sister and I may have different hobbies and personalities, but no matter how different we are, I really love her, and I wish we could reach our dreams in the future.
