PATTERN DRAFTING AND CUTTING FABRIC
How to draft a pattern for a pillowcase:
1. Get a pillow and measure the length and width.
2. On pattern paper, draw a rectangle. The longest side is length measurement and the shortest side the width measurement.
3. Add 1 inch along the three sides of the pattern and 2 inches on the opening.
4. Cut the pattern.

Types of fabric fold:
• Lengthwise fold- Fold fabric in half lengthwise with right sides together.

Tips in Laying the Pattern on the Fabric:
• Figure out what fabric fold you will use to utilize the fabric.
• Lay the pattern on the fabric.
• Make sure the pattern is straight as possible.
• Pin the pattern to the fabric, use enough pins to hold the pattern in place.
• Avoid lifting the pattern it might whole fabric may get distorted.

Steps in Cutting the Fabric for Household Linens:
(Fold the fabric lengthwise to match the selvages.)
• Lay and pin the pattern on the fabric.
• Try out a different arrangement of the pattern that fits and saves on the fabric.
• Trace and mark the pattern to the fabric using tailor’s chalk.
• Remove the pattern.
• Cut the fabric.

What Is It
HEALTHY AND SAFETY PRACTICES IN SEWING
Before starting to sew on the machine, it is important to remember these
sewing practices and safety habits.
1. Check if in the sewing room have enough light. Light should come from the left shoulder.
2. Maintain the proper posture, sit erect while sewing.
3. Check the sewing machine if it operates correctly before you sew.
4. Take off your feet on the treadle each time you stop sewing.
5. Use and handle scissors and other sharp objects with care.
6. Keep pins and needles are intact, use pin cushion.
7. Maintain the cleanliness and neatness in the sewing room.
8. Keep your fingers a safe distance an inch away from the needle at all times.
9. Avoid playing while sewing. Stay focus on what you are doing. Do not use rusty
and broken pins and needles. Dispose it properly.

STEPS IN SEWING HOUSEHOLD LINENS (PILLOW CASE)
1. Lay all materials.
2. Fold the fabric at the center to align the selvages together.
3. Fold 2 inches for the opening facing wrong side.
4. Stitch the folded sides by 1⁄4 inch.
5. Use a zigzag stitch to sew all edges of fabric.
6. Turn out pillowcase right side out and push the corner out using your finger.
