Recap

1. Share something from winter break.

2. What did you learn last week?

3. What are some questions you have from last week?

8

Lithosphere

  • The lithosphere is the top, solid section of the Earth.

  • It is made up by the crust and upper mantle.

  • It forms the tectonic plates

Multiple Choice

Which of the following describes the asthenosphere?

1

The inner core

2

The liquid part of the outer core

3

the molten part of the mantle

the hard part of the crust

10

Asthenosphere

The asthenosphere is the lower mantle.

This part of the mantle gets very hot and sometimes the rock is molten.

States of Matter

Lithosphere (crust and upper mantle): solid

Asthenosphere: Plastic

Outer core: Liquid

Inner core: Solid

Seismic Waves

Scientists figured this out by looking at the patterns of S and P waves, which are types of seismic waves.

Models

Models help us study something that is either too big or too small to see.

Sometimes, they are based on something we have never actually seen.

We have never actually seen all of the layers of the Earth, but we are going to make a model to help us study them.

Directions

  1. 1 member from each team should come up to grab a piece of wax paper with dough.

  2. Write your names on the wax paper in sharpie. Pass the sharpie back when you are done.

  3. Follow each step carefully. We will go step by step.

17

The Inner Core

  • We will start with the inner core.

  • The inner core is a dense ball. It is also the hottest layer.

  • Create this layer by forming a ball of red dough.

media

18

The Outer Core

  • The outer core is also very hot, but not quite as hot as the inner core.

  • Form this layer by wrapping orange dough around the inner core.

media

19

The Mantle

  • The mantle is the next layer. It is still pretty hot, and it is the thickest layer.

  • Wrap a very thick piece of yellow dough around the other layers.

media

20

The Crust

  • This layer is made up of rock and dirt. It is the thinnest layer.

  • Wrap a final, thin layer of grey dough around the other layers.

media

21

Oceans and continents

  • Use the blue and green dough to create oceans and continents on the outside of your Earth.

Clean up

Place just your wax paper with your model on the blacktop counter. Leave the tray on your table.

Add more wax paper to your tray to prepare for next period.
