Weather and Climate

by Lauren Olivares

2

Climate vs. Weather

  • Climate- the average weather condition of a given area over a long period of time.

  • Climate does not change from day to day.

  • Examples of Climate

    • average tempurature (seasons)

    • average rainfall

    • average temperature of a region

  • Weather- condition of the atmosphere on a certain day at a certain time.

  • Weather can change from day to day.

  • Examples of Weather

    • rainy

    • sunny

    • windy

    • snow

Weather Measuring Tools

media

5

Thermometer

Used to measure temperature.

  • Temperature is measured in Fahrenheit or Celsius.

  • Low Temperature = Cold Weather

  • High Temperature = Hot weathe

media

6

Rain Gauge

A tool that is used to measure the amount of rain that has fallen.

  • It looks like a transparent cylinder with markings.

media

7

Weather Vane/Sock

A tool that tells the direction of the wind.

  • Wind direction is measured in N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W, or NW.

  • A "wind sock" can be used to measure wind direction also, but it does not have the directions marked on it.

8

Anemometer

A weather tool that measures wind speed.

  • As wind speed increases, the cups will spin faster and the speed of the wind will be read digitally.

  • Wind speed is measured in "miles per hour" (mph).

media

9

Barometer

A tool for measuring atmospheric pressure or air pressure.

  • Atmospheric pressure, or air pressure, is the weight of the air.

Higher pressure = clear, dry, and sunny skies (This has NOTHING to do with temperature!)

Lower pressure = cloudy skies with a chance of precipitation

media

10

Hygrometer

A tool for measuring humidity of amount of water vapor in the air.

31

Multiple Choice

Which scenario correctly describes the anemometer?

1

Isaac wanted to know how cold it is outside. He used his weather tool to see that the current temperature is 40 degrees Fahrenheit.

2

Isaac wanted to know how much rained fell overnight. He used his weather tool to see that they received 5 inches of rain.

3

Isaac wanted to know how fast the wind was blowing. He used his weather tool to see that the wind was blowing at 15 mph.

32

Multiple Choice

Which scenario properly uses the rain gauge?

1

The grandmother checked her barometer, and she saw that the pressure was low. "That explains why it is raining," she said.

2

Mary's phone said that the wind was blowing 10 mph NE.

3

Joey went outside to see that it was 74 degrees.

4

Joey went outside to see that 5 inches of rain had fallen.

33

Multiple Choice

Which scenario correctly describes the use of a thermometer?

1

Jeff used his thermometer to see that the air pressure is high today.

2

Jeff used his thermometer to see that it is 78 degrees outside.

3

Jeff's thermometer told him that the wind was blowing NE.
