Day 3: Hypothesis
3
Review
First let's remember and review what we learned yesterday.
4
Multiple Choice
Which is better, cats or dogs?
Testable
Non-testable
5
Multiple Choice
Is this a testable question?
What makes plants grow best?
Yes
No
6
Multiple Choice
Does the type of paper affect the distance a paper airplane will fly? What is the DEPENDENT variable?
The distance
Type of paper
Flying
Length of paper
7
Controlled Variables
Controlled variables are the third type of variables.

What Is A Hypothesis?
It's a prediction
It's an educated guess
It's a testable explanation to a question
It's an If...Then statement
Your hypothesis is an educated guess about what will happen when you do your experiment
11
Multiple Choice
When is a hypothesis written?
before you decide on a question
after the experiment
before the experiment
after the conclusion
12
When Writing A Hypothesis
First, write If... followed with the independent variable
Next, write Then... followed with the dependent variable
Because....why you think that (based on your research)
13
Multiple Choice
When writing your hypothesis, what information follows IF?
dependent variable
how you know it will happen
independent variable
anything
14
Multiple Choice
When writing a hypothesis, what information do you fill in after THEN?
dependent variable
independent variable
how you know it will happen
anything good
15
Testable Question
What effect does studying with music have on student test scores?
16
Multiple Choice
What is the Independent Variable in the testable question:
What effect does studying with music have on student test scores?
Studying with music
Student test scores
17
Independent Variable
Studying with music
18
Multiple Choice
What is the Dependent Variable in the testable question:
What effect does studying with music have on student test scores?
Studying with music
Student test scores
19
Dependent Variable
Student test scores
20
Multiple Choice
What is the correct hypothesis to the testable question:
What effect does studying with music have on student test scores?
If students study and their test scores increase, then they will listen to music because music helps them to relax
If students study with music, then their scores will increase because music helps them to relax
If students study, then their scores will increase
21
Hypothesis
If students study with music, then their scores will increase because music helps them to relax
22
Another example
23
Testable Question
How does the amount of leaves on a tree affect how many birds will build nests in it?
24
Independent Variable - amount of leaves on a tree
25
Dependent Variable - amount of birds building nests in the tree
26
Hypothesis
Hypothesis - IF there are a lot of leaves on the tree, THEN there will be more birds building nests in it, BECAUSE there is more shade to protect the birds.
27
Multiple Choice
What is a hypothesis?
the thing changed on purpose in the experiment
an explanation about what you observed
using your 5 senses to gather data
an educated guess about the outcome of an experiment
28
Multiple Choice
Performing a test or experiment allows you to test your ___________.
draw conclusions
hypothesis
senses
battery
29
Multiple Choice
Choose the correct hypothesis for "How will exercising affect your health?"
IF you have better health, THEN you will exercise.
IF you exercise, THEN you will have better health.
Exercising means you're healthy.
30
Multiple Choice
Which of the following hypotheses is written correctly?
If I freeze a tennis ball, then it will not bounce as high because the outer shell turns very hard.
If a tennis ball is frozen, it won't bounce as high as one that is not frozen because it is too hard.
Frozen tennis balls will not bounce as high.
If I heat up a tennis ball it will bounce high
31
Add to Your Packet
Your Question, Hypothesis and Variables
There is not a spot on your packet to add the question, please add that above the hypothesis.
Then add your hypothesis.
Add BOTH the Independent and dependent variables.
Stop after that and go on with the slides.
32
Materials
What do you need for your experiment?
Listing the materials for your experiment will help you prepare.
- Don't add to your packet until told to do so-
33
Example:
If you were going to do an experiment to answer the question: How does the temperature of water affect how fast sugar dissolves?
My material list would be: 3 clear cups, measuring cups, Sugar, Spoon for stirring, Thermometer, Hot water, room-temperature water, and ice water
34
Another Example:
If you were going to do an experiment to answer the question: Does the type of paper towel affect how much water it absorbs?
My material list would be: 3 brands of paper towels, Measuring cup, Water, Bowl or container for soaking, Ruler (to measure paper towel size), Stopwatch
35
Talk with your partner
If you were going to do an experiment to answer the question: How many drops of water can fit on different size coins?
What would your material list be?
36
Multiple Select
What would be on your material list for: How many drops of water can fit on different size coins?
eye dropper
coins: penny, nickel, dime.
a stopwatch
cup of water
37
Add to Your Packet
What materials would you need for your experiment?
Create a list in your packet in the materials section of the materials that you will need to do your experiment.
- Stop after that and go to the next slide.
38
Procedure
The procedure is the steps that you will take to complete your experiment.
39
Example:
If my question is: Does the type of paper affect how far a paper airplane flies?
My procedure might be:
1. Fold three paper airplanes using different types of paper (printer
paper, construction paper, and cardstock).
2. Mark a starting line on the floor.
3. Throw each airplane from the starting line.
4. Measure the distance each airplane flies.
5. Compare the results to determine which paper type worked best.
40
Another Example:
If my question is: What is the effect of temperature on the speed of dissolving sugar?
My procedure might be:
1. Fill three cups with hot, room-temperature, and cold water.
2. add a spoonful of sugar to each cup and stir.
3. Time how long it takes for the sugar to dissolve in each cup.
4. Compare the results to see which temperature dissolves sugar the fastest.
41
Add to Your Packet
What will your procedure be?
Add the steps of your experiment to your packet.
