Describe the water cycle.

• Water on Earth gains heat from the Sun and evaporates

into water vapour.

• As the water vapour rises into the sky, it loses heat and

condenses back into water droplets to form clouds.

• When the water droplets in the clouds get heavier, they

eventually fall back onto Earth as precipitation as rain.

• The rain will then collect into water bodies such as the

seas, rivers and lakes.

• The cycle repeats again when the water evaporates.

Hints

Answer

A substance that is very
important to us. We need it
to live, and it covers over
two thirds of the surface of
the Earth.

Water

A process in which liquid
water turns into water
vapour.
Evaporation

A fluffy-looking object in the
sky that contains tiny water
droplets or ice particles. It is
formed when water vapour
condenses.

Match

Match the following

This type of precipitation is water that falls from clouds in a liquid state.

This type of precipitation is water that falls from clouds in a fluffy, frozen state.

The process in which water circulates from the oceans to the clouds to the land to the rivers, and then accumulates back into the oceans.

A fluffy-looking object in the sky that contains tiny water droplets or ice particles. It is formed when water vapour condenses.

Multiple Choice

When water vapor is cooled and forms droplets of liquid water

1

Condensation

2

Evaporation

3

Transpiration

4

Runoff

18

Multiple Choice

Precipitation occurs because
1
the droplets evaporate in the air
2
the droplets are too light for the air to hold
3
the droplets are too heavy for the air to hold

19

Multiple Choice

When water turns into a gas
1
condensation
2
evaporation
3
precipitation

20

Multiple Choice

What is condensation?
1
The part of the water cycle when the sun heats up water, turning it from a liquid into water vapor or steam. It rises from the ground into the air.
2
The part of the water cycle when the water vapor in the air gets cold. The water turns back into a liquid and forms clouds.
3
The part of the water cycle when clouds get heavy and can no longer hold the liquid water. This causes the water to fall from the sky to the earth as rain, snow, sleet, or hail.

21

Multiple Choice

What is evaporation?
1
The part of the water cycle when the sun heats up water, turning it from a liquid into water vapor or steam. It rises from the ground into the air.
2
The part of the water cycle when the water vapor in the air gets cold. The water turns back into a liquid and forms clouds.
3
