What do you know about TAXONOMY?
8
Taxonomy - sorting and classifying living organisms. We also refer to it as scientific classification or biological classification.
Taxonomy is a remarkably complex, fluid science. Taxonomists study minute features to identify individual species. They also examine the DNA of organisms, which has led to species being moved from one group to another.
Scientists don’t always agree about where an organism belongs. Groups are constantly being refined and organisms are continually moving from one group to another!

The science of describing, classifying, and naming living things is called:
Geology

Taxonomy
Ecology
10
Taxonomy & Insect Orders
Taxonomy is a branch of science about the principles of classifying organisms.

A mnemonic device is a sentence that helps us to memorize a string of words. We want to remember Domain, Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, & Species: D, K, P, C, O, F, G, S
Here are some sentences:
Do Kids Prefer Cheese Over Fried Green Spinach.
Do Koalas Prefer Chocolate Or Fruit, Generally Speaking
Did King Philip Came Over For Good Spaghetti
Daily Keeping Precious Creatures Organized For Grumpy Scientists

13
Biological Classification is the way scientists use to categorize and organize all of life. It can help to distinguish how similar or different living organisms are to each other.
Biological classification works a bit like the library does.
Scientific Classification

Multiple Choice
The plural of phylum is phyla (not phylums) ! What group are phyla subdivided into?
Domains
Classes
Orders
Families

Both Bacteria and Archaea are prokaryotes, single-celled microorganisms with no nuclei.
Eukarya includes us and all other animals, plants, fungi, and single-celled protists – all organisms whose cells have nuclei to enclose their DNA apart from the rest of the cell.
Tree of Life
23
24
Members of this domain have eukaryotic cells, which means, their cells are more complex and have a nucleus. They are divided into 4 KINGDOMS: Protists, Fungi, Plants, & Animals
Eukarya
""True bacteria" are single celled organisms. They are prokaryotic cells, which means their cells are very small, simple, and DO NOT have a nucleus. These cells are found everywhere, including in and on you!
Bacteria
"Old bacteria" are also unicellular & prokaryotic but they often live in extreme environments like the deep-sea vents of our oceans and other inhospitable places.
Archae
3 Domains
25
Multiple Choice
An example of an unicellular organism would be:
monkey
bacteria
spider
human
26
Multiple Choice
I am prokaryotic and am found everywhere. What domain do I belong to?
Bacteria
Archaebacteria
Fungi
Protista

30
Multiple Select
According to our latest classification system, what are the 3 domains of life?
Eukarya
Insects
Bacteria (Eubacteria)
Archaea
31
Multiple Choice
This organism is multicellular, heterotrophic, & has a cell wall made of chitin. What kingdom does it belong in?
fungi
plantae
animalia
protista
32
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Mammalia
Order: Primates
Family: Hominidae
Genus: Homo
Species: sapiens
Classification for Humans
An organism's scientific name is its genus + it species. For example, your scientific name is Homo sapiens
Humans all belong to the domain - Eukarya
33
34
In biology, binomial nomenclature is how organisms are named. Their unique, "scientific name" is made of two parts: the genus and the species.
Binomial nomenclature means "two-part name" or "system of two-part names".
The person who popularized this system for use was Swedish botanist and physician Carolus Linnaeus (1707–1778).
The system ended the use of local common names, which was the source of much confusion.
1. Use italics.
2. Genus 1st, capitalized
3. species 2nd, not capitalized
Ursus martimus

The scientific name for an organism is made from the:
class and family name
genus and species name
domain and kingdom name
kingdom and phylum name

Kingdom - Animal
Phylum - Arthropods
Class - Insecta
Orders - 29 or more! depending on which system is used.
Class Insecta is divided into two sub-classes called the Apterygota (wingless insects) and the Pterygota (winged insects)
