Propagation is the process of reproduction or increasing of number in plants.

Just like animals and human beings, plants are living things that produce their own

kind through reproduction. Plants have different parts that help them reproduce.

The main types of plant propagation are sexual reproduction and asexual

reproduction.he title

Sexual reproduction involves the union of gametes. Gametes are the male and female reproductive cells. Sexual reproduction results in an offspring that is different from its parents.lace this with the title

A. Seed-Bearing Plants – consist of two kinds: angiosperms and gymnosperms.

Some text here about the topic of discussion

15

1. Angiosperms are plants that produce flowers and fruits. Angiosperm means

“covered seeds”. Their seeds are covered inside the fruit. Examples are avocado, mango, papaya, etc. Flowers are the reproductive organs among angiosperms.

The male part of the flower is called stamen. It consists of filament and anther which contains the pollen grains. The pollen grains consist of the male reproductive cells. The female reproductive part is called pistil. It consists of stigma, style and ovary. The ovary contains of the female reproductive cells called ovules.

When do we see a newly reproduced plant?

Some text here about the topic of discussion.

19

Sexual reproduction undergoes major steps:

• Pollination – a process where pollen grains are transferred from the anther to the stigma of the flower through the pollination agents such as birds, butterflies, bees, or wind. There are two kinds of pollination:

✓ Self-pollination happens when pollen is transferred from the anther to the stigma of the same flower or of another flower in the same plant.

✓ Cross-pollination happens when pollen is transferred from the anther to the stigma of the flower in another plant but of the same kind.

20

• Fertilization - once the pollen grains are transferred to the stigma, they move

down to the ovary to fertilize the ovules. Fertilization happens when the male and

female gametes meet.

media

21

• Seed Formation - the fertilized ovule develops into a seed and the ovary swells and develops into a fruit.

media

22

• Seed Dispersal – seeds need to be dispersed or scattered on the ground. This can

be done through some agents like wind, water, animals, or through their own

splitting.

media

23

• Germination – seeds that fall on the right ground under the right condition will

start to grow and develop into a new plant.

2. Gymnosperms are seed plants that don’t have outer covering. Gymnosperm means “naked seeds.” Their seeds are not covered with fruits but instead, they are produced in cones. Common examples of gymnosperms are fir and pine trees.

Pine trees have two kinds of cones, the male cone which produces pollen grains that produce sperm cells and female cone which produces egg cells.

25

Like angiosperms, gymnosperms undergo 5 stages in reproduction. Pollination happens when the pollen is transferred from the male cones to the female cones through the wind. Then, fertilization happens where the sperm cells and egg cells meet. When the egg is fertilized, it develops into a seed within the female cone. It will take three years to develop this seed. When the seed matures, the female cone dries, opens up, and releases the seed. A seed that falls on a good ground, with enough water and sunlight will grow into a new plant.
