8
What does equivalent mean?
If something is equivalent, it is equal or the same.
Equivalent fractions have some rules:
two fractions are equal if they are the same size, based on the same whole, or at the same point on a number line.
9
To determine if two fractions are equivalent, I check to make sure each whole is the same size, then I look at the part that is being compared.
If the shaded part takes up the same space, the fractions are equivalent.
10
I can do the same thing with fractions on a number line.
11
If we set our number lines on top of each other we can look to see if each fraction takes up the same length on the number line.
