Identifying Prepositions

A preposition is one of the most common types of words used in the English language.

A preposition's job is to describe the relationship between different things. (Where are they? How are they? When are they?)

Prepositions help writers add detail and communicate clearly.

Prepositions and Subject-Verb Agreement

Proper writing has clear subject-verb agreement. Singular nouns need singular verbs, and plural nouns need plural verbs.

  • EX: The raven squawks or The ravens squawk.

The verb of a sentence must always agree with the subject of the sentence, not with the object of a preposition.

  • EX: The players on the baseball team were disappointed when they lost the championship game.

(The subject is players, a plural noun. On the baseball team is the prepositional phrase with a singular object. The verb “were” agrees with the plural subject players.)
