Question image

Ferdinand Magellan sailed for Spain. He was the first to circumnavigate the world? What does 'circumnavigate' mean?

1

To travel in a circle around something

2

To go directly through the centre of something

4

Correct!

To circumnavigate something means to circle around something. (It is a bit like the word circumference in math!)

The word circumnavigate relates to sailing but it also used when talking about space!

In fact, the Age of Exploration (1400-1600 CE) has many similarities to the Space Age (1957-present day).

In the previous lesson, we had examined Magellan's voyage right up until the failed mutiny and desertion of two of his ships.

Magellan's voyage around the tip of South America proved very stormy and difficult.

Magellan was so relieved to round to round the tip of South America that he called the new calm waters that he entered 'Pacific' meaning peaceful.

The Pacific Ocean was much larger than Magellan had expected.

As a result, his crew suffered from scurvy and over 100 men died.

Eventually, the 3 remaining ships reached the Philippines.

Whilst in the Philippines, Magellan got involved in a tribal war and died in battle in April, 1521.

Two of Magellan's ships finally reached the Spice Islands in November, 1521.

It wasn't until the following September (1522) that one ship (the Victoria) arrived home to Spain.

Results:

In total, only 35 survivors reached Spain.

Those who had returned from Magellan's voyage had hoped, if successful, that they would increase their wealth and social standing. But the risks they took were very high and in reality, only a small number managed to come home alive.

Still, they were the first people to circumnavigate the world, proving beyond doubt that the world was round! This alone would influence other people and nations to begin exploring.

In the next lesson, you will do an SBA where you must respond to 2 primary sources written documents.

Let's go over how to respond to written sources:

1) Use the same language that is in the question.

2) You must quote from the text to show evidence.

3) Your quote must be THE EXACT SAME as the words used in the source.

Let's do a practice question on the next slide.

The text is from Antonio (the sailor on board Magellan's ship who we met before).

He writes the text into is journal while in the Pacific Ocean.

"One of the men who was on the topsail who was called Navarro, shouted: 'land, land.' With this loud word everybody brightened up so much that the smallest demonstrations of happiness looked quite mad, as anyone in that condition would feel upon seeing it."

For what reason does Antonio say that the men were happy?
