Good historians are able to review the positives and negatives of Imperialism in order to prepare for an essay.

Imperialism:

When a more powerful nation/country controls less powerful nations (-)by means of military force, economic pressure, or through (+)negotiations (peaceful discussions).

What is the definition of Imperialism in YOUR OWN WORDS? (the image may help you, as well!)

Background Information (Context):

• The Industrial Revolution led the United States to become a more powerful country.

• This led to a population increase, improvements in technology, and a boost to the economy, especially in urban-city areas.

• Over time, the U.S. established itself as one of the most powerful countries in the world and they began imposing (pushing) their control onto other countries and groups of people

Think back to what we have learned about Imperialism/Expansion: What groups of people or countries did the United States imperialize (try to control/take over)?

Forms of Imperialism that we've looked into:

• Westward Expansion (Manifest Destiny)

• Purchase of Alaska

• Annexation of Hawaii (adding Hawaii as a US territory)

• Annexation of Philippines

• Spanish American War and how the US gained: the Philippines, Cuba, and Puerto Rico as a result.
