Feudalism (feudal system) was a set of legal and military customs in medieval Europe that flourished between the 9th and 15th centuries.

It is a social and political system that existed in Europe during the Middle Ages in which people worked and fought for nobles who gave them protection and the use of land in return.

It can be broadly defined as a system for structuring society around relationships derived from the holding of land, known as a fiefdom or fief, in exchange for service or labour.

The system was introduced by William the conqueror who ruled England from 1066AD after deafiting King Harold Godwinson at the battle of Hastings. William the conqueror was a foreigner from Normandy (France) therefore he was not popular as King of England. He spent much time away hence he needed a system to keep the English in control under his rule and therefore he introduced the feudal system in which land (fief) was the most valued asset.
