Cumberland Trail
As many as 300,000 settlers traveled along the Wilderness Road from 1775 to 1810. In addition to its human traffic, the trail provided a route for farm produce intended for sale in markets closer to the coast, as well as goods and supplies to supply the growing western settlements. In 1792, Kentucky was admitted to the Union as the 15 state.
By 1840, use of the Wilderness Road had declined, as advances in engineering had enabled waterway travel via the Erie Canal and through the rivers of the Ohio Valley.

The manual labor to build the Central Pacific's roadbed, bridges and tunnels was done primarily by many thousands of emigrant workers from China under the direction of skilled non-Chinese supervisors. Labor-saving devices in those days consisted primarily of wheelbarrows, horse or mule pulled carts, and a few railroad pulled gondolas. The construction work involved an immense amount of manual labor. Initially, Central Pacific had a hard time hiring and keeping unskilled workers on its line, as many would leave for the prospect of far more lucrative gold or silver mining Options elsewhere.

Steamboat
There was a need for more efficient river transportation, since it took a great deal of muscle power to move a craft against the current.
Robert Fulton with the assistance of Robert R. Livingston, created a steamboat which first traveled up the Hudson River from New York City to Albany, New York, at an impressive speed.
Steamboat traffic grew steadily along the Mississippi River and other river systems in the inland United States.
