What do you think energy has to do with the heating systems?

You have 2 glasses of tea.  One has been in the refrigerator, while the other has been sitting on the counter.  What is the difference between the molecules in the 2 glasses?  

For each glass, describe the:

Temperature

Molecular speed

Kinetic energy

Which claim do you think is correct?

• Claim 1: Molecules speed up when energy is created and slow down when energy is destroyed.

• Claim 2: Molecules speed up when they get energy from other molecules, and slow down when they give energy to other molecules.

Based on our key concepts from today, describe why the molecules in an ice pack get warmer overtime when you leave it on your arm.  Be sure to describe how kinetic energy transfers and how speed of the molecules changes.

You drop an ice cube into a cup of hot liquid and you drop another ice cube into a pitcher of hot liquid that is the same temperature.  Which ice cube will melt faster?  Why?  (Hint: Think of the ice cube as one object, and the liquid as the other object)
