  • Translations "slide" each point of a figure in the same direction and the same distance.

  • Translations on the x-coordinate can move a figure left or right.

  • Translations on the y-coordinate can move a figure up or down.

  • We can represent these movements with addition and subtraction.​

In the picture to the right, the Pre-image is the blue triangle.

To move from the blue triangle to the red triangle, we moved 4 to the left, and 5 up.

This rule can be written using the rule: (x,y) --> (x - 4, y + 5).​
