Casabianca

By Nakshatri Dhotre

2

Casabianca was standing on the board of a burning ship. He was the only one on the ship, some fled and some died. The fire showed him dead soldiers.

The boy stood on the burning deck,

Whence all but he had fled,

The flame the lit the battles wreck,

Shone him him o'er the dead.

3

He stood handsome and bright despite the flames

He looked as if he was born to rule the storm. He looked brave and proud to carry out the command as he had inherited nobility and pride from his forefathers.

Yet beautiful and bright he stood,

As born to rule the storm,

A creature of heroic blood,

A proud though childlike form.

4

The flames were getting stronger. Yet he stood there waiting for his father's command, he did not know that his father was lying dead and that

The flames rolled on - he would not go,

Without his father's words,

That father, faint in death below,

His voice no longer heard
