If you were a leader in your country, what would you do?

→ 実際は、20世紀回顧展に家族や友達の写真​がある可能性は低い。（過去形を用いることで現在の事実と距離がある＝「起こり得ない」ことを表す）

この場合、接続詞 if に続く「仮定」を表す副詞節の中の動詞は、過去形を用いる。​主節はwould/

could/mightなど低い可能性を​表す表現を使う。

※ 過去形を使うことで、現実とは異なる(距離がある)ことを表す。(仮定法過去)

​仮定法過去（今起こり得ないことへの仮定）

① if 節の動詞には、過去形を用いる。​

② if節の動詞がbe動詞の場合、人称や数に関係なくwereを使う。（※口語ではwasも可。）

③ 主節（if節でない方）の動詞はwould/could/might＋動詞の原形​

※ 過去完了形を使うことで、過去の現実とは異なる(距離がある)ことを表す。過去への「後悔」の念を表すときなどに用いられる。

過去の事実と異なることを仮定として表すとき、後 悔を表すときに用いられる。​
