Multiple Choice

All planets _______________

1

are the same size

2

are made of rock

3

orbit a star

4

have an atmosphere

SOLAR SYSTEM

A solar system is made up of one or more stars and all the objects that orbit the star. There are many solar systems in the Milky Way Galaxy. Our own solar system is simply called the Solar System. The star at the center of the Solar System is the Sun. The Sun, like all stars, produces energy, some of it in the form of light. Other forms of energy the Sun produces is radiant energy, some of which we feel as heat.

Multiple Choice

There are many ___________ in our ______________.

1

galaxies in our solar system

2

solar systems in our galaxy

3

stars in our solar system

4

universes in our galaxy

6

Multiple Choice

Asteroids are irregularly shaped objects that orbit the Sun. Many of the asteroids are found in a region called the asteroid belt. The asteroid belt separates:

1

the Sun from the planets

2

the Inner and Outer planets

3

our solar system from the the rest of the galaxy

4

the Milky Way galaxy from other galaxies

7

There are eight planets that orbit the Sun. Planets are spheres, like the Sun. Planets do not produce energy in the form of light. Planets reflect the light of the Sun. Some planets (Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars) have a rocky surface. Other planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune, and Uranus) are gas giants.

8

The four inner planets, Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars, are smaller than the gas giants of the outer planets. Earth and Mars have moons. Earth has one moon, Mars has two. The inner planets have a rocky surface, and contain some kind of atmosphere containing gases. Mercury’s atmosphere is extremely thin, and can’t be seen. The atmosphere of Venus is so cloudy and think that the surface is never seen. How do we know that Venus has a rocky surface? Landers have sent back pictures from the surface of Venus showing the rocky landscape.

9

Mercury

Order From Sun: 1st

Number of Moons: 0

Temperature: Coldest -290 F, Warmest 800 F

Atmosphere: None - No wind, water, air or weather

10

Mercury: Interesting Facts

Named for the Roman god of commerce, travel and thievery because it moves so quickly around the sun

media

11

Multiple Choice

Why is Mercury named after the Roman god of commerce, travel and thievery?

1

it moves so slow

2

it stole a moon from Venus

3

it's orbit it so large

4

it moves so fast

12

Venus

Order from Sun: 2nd

Number of Moons: 0

Temperature: Hottest Planet 860F

Atmosphere: Mostly carbon dioxide, thick - traps heat

media

13

Venus: Interesting Facts

-Named after Roman goddess of love and beauty

-Brightest object in the sky besides sun and moon

-"Morning Star" (at sunrise it is seen in the east, at sunset it is seen in the west)

-Most Volcanoes

-Called Earth's sister planet

1

has 2 moons

2

has the most volcanoes

3

called Earth's sister planet

4

atmosphere is thin and traps no heat

15

Earth

Order from Sun: 3rd

Number of Moons: 1

Temperature: Mild, Coldest -114F, Warmest 116F

Atmosphere: Only planet with water on its surface, gases that surround the planet support life

media

16

Earth: Interesting Facts

-Old English & German name for soil

-Only planet known to support life

-Earthquakes, volcanoes and mountains form because of plate tectonics that make up the surface

-Largest of the inner planets

plate tectonics cause earthquakes, volcanoes and mountains on its surface

18

Mars

Order from Sun: 4th

Number of Moons: 2

Temperature: Winter NIghts -184F, Summer Days 77F

Atmosphere: Mostly carbon dioxide, thin - doesn't trap in heat, violent dust storms

19

Mars: Interesting Facts

-Named after the Roman god of war

-Red Planet - covered in iron oxide (rust)

-Massive volcanoes - Mount Olympus Mons largest in our solar system

has 2 moons

2

explored with rovers

3

called the "blue planet" because of all the water on its surface

4

has the largest volcano in our solar system

21

Earth has an atmosphere with gases that support life. Earth also has oceans of liquid water. While water is found in many other places in the Solar System, Earth is the only place with conditions that are just right for water to exist as a liquid. Mars once had water on the surface: there is evidence of rivers and lakes that once existed on Mars. Today, most of the water on Mars has escaped to space, and what is left is frozen in the surface.
