Who: Colonists, Native Americans, The French & The British
What: The French-Indian War
When: 1700's
Where: North America
Why: Britain wanted to remain a world power and knew that he western territories in North America would help that cause.
RESULTS: England won, but they would not share the territory
(#proclamationof1763) with the colonists as a way to keep it protected for the Native Americans. After all, it WAS their land. This angered the colonists!

Colonial Control
Who: British & Colonists
What: The Stamp Act (people the colonists did not elect taxed all paper documents - #taxationwithoutrepresentation!)
When: 1765
Where: 13 colonies
Why: The French-Indian War was expensive for the British. They needed the money from somewhere...
RESULTS: Colonists protested; Stamp Act was repealed a year later. However, the British insisted they still had the right to tax the colonists.
4
Colonial Control
Who: Colonists & British Soldiers
What: The Boston Massacre
When: March 5, 1770
Where: Boston, Massachusetts
Why: Britain was losing control of the colonies - especially in the Boston area, so they sent 2,000 troops in the hopes that the colonists would settle down.
RESULTS: The British killed 5 colonists & wounded 6 others. The colonists were now split into two groups: The Loyalists (colonists loyal to the British Crown & The Patriots (colonists that opposed British rule)
5
Colonial Control
Who: British & Colonists
What: The Tea Act (an act to bail out the East India Trading Company - remember they were hired by the English to transport all the goods back and forth??
When: 1773
Where: Colonial America
Why: The British decided to tax all imported goods - even the goods that were made form the raw materials the colonists sent to Great Britain! Really???
RESULTS: The result was an increase in anger from the colonists and shortly after, the Boston Tea Party ensued.
6
Colonial Control
Who: The Sons of Liberty (Patriots)
What: The Boston Tea Party (Colonists/Patriots dressed up as Native Americans and dumped all the British tea into the harbor!!!)
When: December, 1773
Where: Boston Harbor, Massachusetts
Why: Because the British taxed all the imports to pay for the failing East India Trading Company.
RESULTS: The British shut down Boston Harbor until all the tea was recovered/paid for, required colonists to quarter British soldiers on demand, extended freedom of worship rights to French-Canadian Catholics but not to any other religious group, and moved all the judicial authority back to Britain which created martial law.
7
Colonial Control
Who: Colonists
What: The First Continental Congress (Reps from 12 of the 13 colonies met in Philadelphia to organize resistance efforts; Georgia did not attend).
When: 1774
Where: Philadelphia, PA
Why: C.C. met for weeks to organize resistance efforts against the Coercive Acts; ultimately issued a Declaration of Rights (NOT the Declaration of Independence!), which affirmed their loyalty to Britain, but disputed Britain's rights to tax colonists. This declaration also threatened to stop importing British goods if the Coercive Acts were not repealed. 1st C.C. also promised to meet again in 1775 if there demands were not met.
RESULTS: The demands of the C.C. did not get met
