  • he was found wandering through a training session ​on an army base in Connecticut

  • ​one soldier in particular took a special liking to him and called him stubby because of the way his tail looked

  • ​Corporal Robert Conroy didn't want to leave stubby when it was time to go to war, so he smuggled him onto the ship to France

Sergeant stubby's legacy

  • he inspired a childrens book in the 70's titled "Stubby-Brave Soldier Dog"

  • he also inspired Georgetown's original halftime shown by playing with a football on the field in between halves

  • today Stubby's remains are stuffed and put on display with all his badges and medals in the Smithsonian Institute in Washington D.C​
