The Atmosphere: Layers
Order of the Layers:
Thermosphere- (hot) absorbs high energy radiation
Mesosphere- (cold) burns meteoroids
Stratosphere- (hot) has the ozone layer
Troposphere - (cold) densest layer; where we live

As altitude increases and air pressure decreases, it effects temperature. This happens because of the way energy is absorbed into the atmosphere.
Temperature and altitude
Air Pressure is like the force of wind. When altitude increases, air pressure decreases. While climbing a mountain, you will notice a difference in air and is hard to breathe in.
Air Pressure
Air pressure and altitude
5
Multiple Choice
As altitude increases…
Air pressure increases
Air pressure decreases
Temperature increases
None of the above
6
Greenhouse effect and the ozone layer
The Greenhouse effect is when a mixture of gases warm up the Earth. When there is sunlight, the gases heat up by absorbing energy. They release the energy and then it warms up the Earth.
The ozone layer is a layer in the stratosphere that protects humans from the sun’s harmful rays. Our ozone layer is decreasing because of air pollution.

Wind: Explained
The movement of air and differences in air pressure is called WIND.
Uneven heating causes the air to be at different temperatures. This is how in Florida was have more warm air and in Europe (for example) has cooler air.

9
Multiple Choice
_____ is the reason why air is different temperatures
Air pressure
Heat
Uneven heating
Temperature
10
The Coriolis effect is the process of how wind rotates with the earth.
wind can move while earth is rotating.

Global winds: Explained
Global Winds in order:
Trade Winds 0-30°
Westerlies 30-60°
Polar Easterlies 60-90°
Global Winds are different wind systems that travel long distances
Doldrums are areas in the ocean that are calm and have no wind
Horse Latitudes are also areas that are calm but air stops moving and sinks
13
Multiple Choice
Is this the correct order of global winds?
Trade winds
Polar Easterlies
Westerlies
True
False
14
During the day, air from the valley blows up into the mountains so the valley has high pressure. During the night, the opposite happens, mountains have high pressure.
Valley and Mountain breezes
During the day, air from the sea has high pressure and pushes on land.
During the night, the opposite happens which makes the land have more pressure.
Land and Sea breezes
Local Winds: Explained
15
Multiple Choice
During the day, land has…
High pressure
Low pressure
No pressure
16
jet streams
Jet streams are narrow belts with a huge gust of wind that travels from west to east. Polar jet streams are near the poles and subtropical jet streams are near the equator.

Review (yes I know but do it anyways)
The layers of the atmosphere are : thermosphere, mesosphere, stratosphere, and troposphere
When altitude increases, air pressure decreases
The Coriolis effect is how wind rotates with Earth
The Greenhouse effect is the reason why the Earth is being warmed
Global winds are trade winds, westerlies, and polar easterlies.
