ROUNDING

RULES FOR ROUNDING

1. Identify what place the question is asking you to round to.

2. Look to the right of the place you are rounding too.

3. Decide if the number rounds up or stays the same by following the rule: 4 or less let it rest, 5 or more add one more.

-This means if the number to the right of the place you are rounding to is 4 or less then that digit in that place will not change. If the number to the right of the place you are rounding to is 5 or more you add one to the place you are roundiing to.

10

Rounding Example 1

Round the number 4,567 to the nearest THOUSANDS PLACE

1. Decide what number is in the thousands place: the 4 is in the thousands place

2. Look to the right of the place in which you are rounding: there is a 5 to the right of the place in which we are rounding.

3. Follow the rule 4 or less let it rest, 5 or more add one more: to the right of the 4 in the thousands place there is a 5, which means I will add one more to the 4 and it will become 5, and everything else to the right of the place which I rounded will become 0's. Everything to the left needs to stay the same.

4. So 4,567 rounded to the thousands place is 5,000

Rounding Example 2

Round the number 93,726 to the nearest HUNDREDS PLACE

1. Decide what number is in the thousands place: the 7is in the hundreds place

2. Look to the right of the place in which you are rounding: there is a 2 to the right of the place in which we are rounding.

3. Follow the rule 4 or less let it rest, 5 or more add one more: to the right of the 7 in the hundreds place there is a 2 the tens place, which means I will leave the 7 in the hundreds place the same and everything else to the right of the place which I rounded will become 0's. Everything to the left need to stay the same.

4. So 93,726 rounded to the thousands place is 93,700
