Sentences

​A simple sentence has one verb and one idea:

Simple sentences can be combined (using connectives) to form compound or complex sentences. ​

Clauses

A clause is a set of words containing a subject and a predicate.

The simple sentences used to create compound and complex sentences are called clauses.

Complex Sentence

A complex sentence has one main clause and one or more subordinate clauses that provide extra information. They are joined by subordinate connectives.
