Pythagorean Theorem

NC.8.G.6

How can you solve for missing side lengths of a right triangle?

By Ms. May

2

What is Pythagorean Theorem?

It explains the relationship between the sides of a RIGHT triangle. sides A & B are called 'legs', while side C is known as the 'Hypotenuse'

Hypotenuse

Who is he?

The hypotenuse( always c) is the longest side of the triangle, located directly across from the right angle! In a right triangle,  the square of the hypotenuse side is equal to the sum of squares of the other two sides.

in other words a^2+b^2 = c^2

To recap,
  1. Pythagorean Theorem explains the relationship of the side lengths of RIGHT TRIANGLES.

  2. Right Triangles have 2 legs & a hypotenuse

  3. Hypotenuse is the longest side and across from right angle.

  4. the formula is a^2+b^2= c^2, where a & b are sides and c is hypotenuse

  5. the formula can help find any of the 3 missing sides

  6. If 3 side lengths make the formula true, those lengths CAN form a right triangle, its known as a PYTHAGOREAN TRIPLE
