Where are we?
Locations with prepositional phrases
12
Location, location, location
When telling location, use the verb estar:
¿Dónde está la iglesia? 'Where is the church?'
Está cerca del bosque. 'It's near the forest.'
¿Dónde estás? 'Where are you?'
Estoy en el café. 'I'm at the café.'
Remember that de followed by el becomes del, and a followed by el becomes al:
La farmacia está detrás del correo. 'The pharmacy is behind the post office.'
Mi casa está al lado de la tuya. 'My house is next to yours.'
13
Open Ended
Use the following words to make a sentence:
La gasolinera / a la izuierda / de la farmacia / está

Don't be so negative!
The Negatives
Alguien está aquí. Someone is here. Nadie está aqui. No one is here.
Tengo algo. I have something. No tengo nada. I have nothing.
Siempre llevo gafas. I always wear glasses. Nunca llevo gafas. I never wear glasses. Tengo un libro y una revista. I have a book and a magazine. No tengo ni un libro ni una revista.
I have neither a book nor a magazine.
Me gusta también. I like it also. No me gusta tampoco. I don't like it either.
15
Negatives...
The negative words can be used alone, preceding the verb.
Nadie habla. 'No one speaks.'
Él nunca come. 'He never eats.'
Alfredo tampoco baila. 'Alfredo doesn't dance either.'
The negative words can also be used with the word no, following the verb. Unlike English, double negatives are acceptable in Spanish. Even though the meaning is still essentially the same, the extra no gives emphasis to the statement.
No habla nadie. 'No one speaks.'
Él no come nunca. 'He never eats.'
Alfredo no baila tampoco. 'Alfredo doesn't dance either.'
16
Why so negative?
Alguien está aquí. Someone is here.Nadie está aqui. No one is here.
Tengo algo. I have something. No tengo nada. I have nothing
Siempre llevo gafas. I always wear glasses.Nunca llevo gafas. I never wear glasses.
Tengo un libro y una revista. I have a book and a magazine.
No tengo ni un libro ni una revista. I have neither a book nor a magazine.
Me gusta también. I like it also.No me gusta tampoco. I don't like it either.
Negative stays negative! We don't mix affirmative and negative in Spanish:
Ex: She doesn't need anything in Spanish would be she doesn't need nothing.
17
Negatives continued..
Watch how we switch positives into negatives..
Me gusta el chocolate tambien.
No me gusta el chocolate tampoco.
Alguien está en la clase de español.
Nadie está en la clase de español.

22
Practice: 2.1.11
