Chemical energy can be used to create change. Four kinds of chemical changes are burning, cooking, rusting, and decaying. A student wants to investigate how chemical energy changes cake batter while cooking. Which of the following forms of energy would the student use to start the chemical changes that happen when baking a cake?
sound
heat
light
mechanical

Earlier in the school year, when we were discussing different environments, we talked about mangroves. Mangroves grow along the coast of Florida, and are important for wildlife to grow. They are also important for people for recreation, such as canoeing, kayaking, and fishing.
4
Multiple Choice
Mangroves can live in...
Hot water
Cold water
Salty water
Dirty water
5
In this video, what did you observe about the environment? Was the Sun out? Were there clouds in the sky? Was the wind blowing? Was the water moving?
6
Poll
Have you ever been KAYAKING before?
YES
NO
NOT SURE
7
Open Ended
What did you like about the time you went kayaking? If you've never been, what did you enjoy about the video?

As air heats up during the day as a result of the Sun’s energy, that air begins to rise. As hot air rises, cool air from somewhere else will move in to fill the space left behind. Then that cool air starts to warm and rise, keeping the cycle going. The movement of air is called wind. As the wind blew through the mangroves and over the water, it pushed the canoe and caused it to move. Moving air, wind, is a source of energy. In this example, the wind is one of the sources of energy to move the canoe.
9
Multiple Choice
What causes wind?
differences in air pressure
differences in gravity
difference in oxygen
differences in the thermosphere

Wind turbines use the energy of the wind to move huge fan blades. As the fan blades move, the generator inside the turbine changes the energy of motion from the wind into electrical energy that can be used in homes.
12
Multiple Choice
5. What do wind turbines make?
Electricity
Heat
Weather
Wind
13
Multiple Select
Wind power is ... (choose 2)
energy derived from the wind
always available
used to produce electricity
has no disadvantages
14
At the same time the wind was blowing the canoe, the water was moving, and adding to the motion of the canoe. Sometimes the water moves because the tide is moving. Sometimes the water moves because there is a current moving water from one place to another. Power dams use the energy of water moving through turbines the same way that wind turbines do. Moving water turns a generator that produces electricity.
15
Multiple Choice
What is hydro?
water
wind
nuclear
gas

17
Multiple Choice
What happens when water flows through a dam?
The water evaporates.
The water turns a turbine.
The water is pumped back up.
The water creates sparks making electricity.
18
Multiple Choice
What allows water to flow through a dam?
The water is pumped out.
The water constantly flows through without ever stopping.
The water is pushed out when a motor is turned on.
The water is released from a higher elevation to a lower elevation.
19
To move the canoe, a person has to produce enough energy to overcome the force of gravity pulling the canoe down. He or she has to produce enough energy to overcome the force of friction between the canoe and the water. He or she has to produce enough energy to overcome the energy of the wind and the water. That is a lot of energy needed to move the canoe.

This is why FOOD is so important. To be able to do all of that work, you need energy. Eating a healthy diet, including apples, allows you to get all of the chemical energy stored in the apple, and CONVERT it to mechanical energy to help do all of the work you need!
24
Multiple Choice
Which of the following is an example of chemical energy being changed into kinetic energy?
Digested food giving you energy to jump.
A battery giving a flashlight energy to light up.
A hand hitting a drum making music.
Two liquids mixed together and get hot.
25
Multiple Choice
A student was investigating that energy is the ability to cause motion or create change. He cooked pancakes to demonstrate that energy changed the pancake batter into pancakes. Which of the following is the source of energy that created the change in the pancakes?
sound
light
heat
mechanical
