The plantation system expanded and was at the center of Southern society. Most of the South was Rural, or country. Large plantations in the South relied on enslaved Africans for labor.

The North's economy grew due to increses in industry, rather than agriculture. Many factories were built in cities. People movewd to Northern cities because that is where the job opportunities were. As a result, urbanization increased. Most new US immigrants arrived in the North and many settled here. This added to the population of the region and its diversity.​

In the West

As the North became more crowded, many settlers packed up and moved west in search of new opportunities. Industries in the West developed along major rivers and the Great Lakes. Transportation routes increased as many people worked in jobs clearing land, draining swamps, and building railroads.
