After the Kansas Nebraska act was passed pro-slavery and anti-slavery settlers rushed to Kansas. Both sides wanted to influence the vote on whether Kansas would become a slave or free state. Tensions were high in Kansas and violence broke out between the pro and anti slavery settlers. Violence also spilled over into Congress.... at this time in 1856 the Civil War is only 5 years away
