Emergency Preparedness

Emergency Preparedness
A medical emergency is any condition or injury requiring immediate care.
In a medical emergency, first aid [immediate medical attention given to a victim of an injury or sudden illness] should be given until qualified medical help arrives.
It is important to know when to call 911.

Knowing Priorities
Any medical emergency that is not treated immediately could result in permanent disability or even death.
If the victim is unconscious, first aid may be given without consent; however, do not move the victim unless his life is endangered.
Go to page 117 and read Emergency Procedures & list.

Checks for First Aid
After checking your surroundings and sending someone for help, you need to examine the victim for life-threatening conditions: blocked airway, no breathing, and severe bleeding.
Before beginning first aid procedures, try to determine if a victim has suffered a head or spinal injury. Do not move a person's neck or back if you suspect the possibility of spinal injuries unless movement is necessary to save the victim's life.

Checks for First Aid
Once life-threatening conditions are under control, look for a medical alert tag around the victim's neck or wrist. Medical alert tags contain information about medical problems, such as allergies, diabetes, and heart disease, which may affect any first-aid procedures that are given.
Check for any broken bones, then monitor the breathing every two minutes and start CPR if the breathing stops. Continue until EMS (emergency medical services) personnel arrive.

Respiratory Emergencies
Not Breathing
If a person's respiratory system fails, the flow of oxygen throughout the body ceases within minutes, and the body's cells quickly run out of oxygen and begin to die. Heart failure, brain damage, and eventual death will result if the victim's breathing is not restarted. Death occurs withing five minutes after breathing stops in over 50% of respiratory emergencies.
