Escalating Conflict w/ France

France causes an issue.

The French disagreed w/ Jay's Treaty. America went to war with France. France wanted a loan from the U.S. John Addams never revealed the names of the agents. Many Americans were mad about this affair. Addams strengthened the navy b/c of French attacks. Hamilton hoped this would make his party stronger. This was a goal for Federalists.

Addams resisted Hamilton's call for war. Napolean agreed to stop attacking American ships. Addams kept America out of war.

Congress and the Acts

Congress began to pass more laws. Congress didn't want immigrants who support Jefferson. The acts limited freedom of speech and the press. Jefferson said these laws threatened American liberties. Jefferson stated that the states could nullify a law. He claimed each state had the right to judge for itself. Eventually, Congress changed the acts.

Presidential Election of 1800

An eventful election

By 1800, war w/ France was almost over. Many Republicans supported Jefferson. But both candidates tied for president. The House of Representatives decide who would win. Congress then passed the Twelfth Amendment. The Federalist party began to fall apart.
