EID 2.1 CELLS OF THE ROUGH SKINNED NEWT

By: Ms. Bailey*

2

LEsson Objective:

KWBAT recognize the components of the cell theory.

KWBAT differentiate between structure and function in plant and animal cell organelles.

TEKS:

7.12(D)  differentiate between structure and function in plant and animal cell organelles, including cell  membrane, cell wall, nucleus, cytoplasm, mitochondrion, chloroplast, and vacuole

7.12(F)  recognize the components of cell theory

3

Students learn:

  • The cell theory states that 1) all organisms are composed of cells, 2) cells are alive and the basic living units of organization in all organisms, and 3) all cells come from other cells.

  • Plant and animal cells have many common cellular structures including ribosomes, mitochondria, a nucleus and a cell membrane to carry out basic functions such as making proteins, supplying energy, controlling the activities of the cell and allowing movement of materials in and out of the cell.

  • Plant cells are different from animal cells in that they have a cell wall, chloroplasts and a large central vacuole.  These organelles are important for the specialized functions that plant cells carry out such as giving plants their stiffness and allowing the cell to produce food using sunlight.

  • Instead of having chloroplast, animal cells have lysosomes which are needed to break down food that the organism obtains from eating other organisms.

4

Lesson Vocabulary:

  1. Cell: basic unit of life

  2. Unicellular: an organism made up of one cell

  3. Multicellular: an organisms made up of more than one cell

  4. Organelle: a cell structure within a cell that performs a specific job/function

  5. Cell membrane: outer covering that gives shape to the cell and allows movement of materials in and out of the cell

  6. Cell wall: outer boundary surrounding plant cells just outside the cell membrane; provides support and protection

  7. Nucleus: large organelle in a cell that controls the cell’s activities

  8. Mitochondria: supplies energy to the cell

  9. Chloroplast: cell structure in plants that captures light energy from the sun and converts it to energy it can use.

  10. Vacuole: sac-like storage space that stores waste and food

Welcome back Biologists!  Today we begin Chapter 2. In Chapter 1 you learned about the rough-skinned newts ecosystem on the macroscale to start to understand why the population changed over time.  We’re now going to zoom into the microscale to study the newts’ cells and their functions. This will help us to determine how individuals in a population get their traits which will influence how the population changes over time.

Life on Earth is very diverse.  Organisms are diverse; each has a specific role in its ecosystem.  From the frozen tundra to the tropical rainforests to the arid deserts, every species is different and uniquely adapted to survive in a specific environment.
