Multiple Choice

Do you have your phone in the box, notebook out, and ready to take notes?
(you will need to take a picture and upload it at the end)

1

YES I have my notebook out

2

No, I know it means a bad grade

Word Problems with Standard Form

Objective: Solve word problems using the Standard Form of an equation.

3

Word Problems with Standard Form

In some word problems, you will have TWO RATES.

There will also be a TOTAL of some kind.

When these kinds of word problems come up we would use the Standard Form when making an equation.

Ax + By = C

The A and B would be the slopes (rate of change)

And C would be the total

5

EXAMPLE

A 100-point test has some questions worth 2 points a piece and other questions worth 4 points apiece.

DEFINE the variables

x stands for:

y stands for:

IDENTIFY the slopes (rates)

A:

B:

IDENTIFY the total

C:

CREATE the Equation

Ax + By = C

6

EXAMPLE

A 100-point test has some questions worth 2 points a piece and other questions worth 4 points apiece.

Write an equation that describes all possible numbers that could be on the test.

2x + 4y = 100

If you have 24 questions worth 4 points apiece, how many questions will be worth 2 points a piece?

7

EXAMPLE

Louise has $36 in five-dollar bills and singles. If she has two five-dollar bills, how many singles does she have?

DEFINE the variables

x stands for:

y stands for:

IDENTIFY the slopes (rates)

A:

B:

IDENTIFY the total

C:

CREATE the Equation

Ax + By = C
