Vocabulary

Copy This in Your notebook.

Mean - The sum of all numbers divided by the number of numbers. Sometimes called Average.

Median - The middle value when the values are in numerical order. If there is an even number of numbers, add the middle two and divide by two.

Mode - The most repeated number. There can be more than one mode.

Range - The difference between highest and lowest numbers.

3

Sum all the numbers.

3+ 8 + 4 + 6 + 5 + 4 = 30

Then divide by the number of terms.

30/6 = 5

Mean

Isaiah studied for his finals the last six days. Here is the number hours he studied each day. 3, 8, 4, 6, 5, 4. What is the mean, median, mode, and range.

4

Find the most repeated number. in this case it is 4.

Mode = 4

Mode

Reorder data from least to greatest. 3, 4, 4, 5, 6, 8

Find the middle number in this case there is two.

4 and 5 add them and divide by 2 to get 4.5.

Median

Range - The highest minus the lowest. 8 - 3 = 5

Outliers

Outliers - A value that stands out in a data set.

7, 10, 54, 9, 12, 8, 5

Which number stands out? 54

Find the Mean median mode with the outlier, and then find the Mean Median Mode without the outlier.

Answer the Questions in your notebook then go to the next slide.

Follow - Up Questions

How do the means differ with and without the outlier?

How does the outlier effect the median?

How does the outlier effect the mode.?

Which one was effected the most?

12

Multiple Choice

The prices at several different stores for a pair of shoes are shown below.
$78, $79, $81, $82, $83
Two days later, another store has the same shoes on sale for $65. How does the new price affect the data?
1
Only the range was affected.
2
The median increased, and the range increased.
3
The mean increased, and the range increased.
4
The mean decreased and the range increased.

13

Multiple Choice

The data set below has an outlier of 42.
2, 5, 12, 15, 19, 4, 6, 11, 16, 18, 12, 12, 42
What effect does removing the outlier have on the distribution of the data?
1
The mean will decrease
2
The median will decrease
3
The mean will increase
4
The median will increase

14

Multiple Choice

Gabriella’s quiz grades are shown below.
88, 92, 92, 96, 98
Gabriella scored a 20 on her sixth quiz. What effect does this score have?
1
The low score causes the median to increase.
2
The low score causes the median to decrease.
3
The low score causes the mean to increase.
4
The low score causes the mean to decrease.

15

Multiple Choice
