Timeline of the Key Events in Lower Canada, 1837-1838
March 1837: Britain rejects a petition for reforms prepared by the Parti-patriote. Papineau organizes rallies against the government.
October 1837: Britain moves troops into Lower Canada (out of Upper Canada)
November 16, 1837: The government tries to arrest Patriote leaders. The leaders escape to the countryside and the Patriotes prepare to fight British Troops.
November 23, 1837: The Patriotes win a battle against the British troops at Saint-Denis.
November 25, 1837: British troops defeat Patriotes at Saint-Charles & return to Saint-Denis and burn it.
December 14, 1837: British troops capture Saint-Eustache. Papineau and other Patriote leaders flee to the United States. British troops loot and burn many Canadien settlements.
Events in 1838: Patriotes now in the U.S. organize a second rebellion in November. The government defeats the rebellion in a week. British volunteers again attack settlements.

December 7, 1837: The government arms volunteers in Upper Canada to fight Mackenzie. The volunteers quickly defeat the rebels. Mackenzie flees to the U.S.
Events in 1838: From the U.S. Mackenzie continues to organize raids on Upper Canada. He captures Navy island near Niagara Falls, where he declares a "republic of Upper Canada." British troops and volunteers push back the raids each time.
