• Lived in coastal North Carolina

• Went into hiding when she had children, but they were sent to NY

• Escaped to the North​ to find her kids

• Wrote her life story​

• Worked in a home

• Was able to buy his freedom for a lot of money, but still struggled to actually live as a free man

• Wrote his life story

• Opened a school later in life​

• ​Worked in a home as a child

• After the Civil War, she earned a scholarship to college

• Had to struggle to attend because she was a woman, but finally did

• Wrote a book about her life

• Became the 4th Black woman in the COUNTRY to earn a doctorate degree!​
