2. Cultivating– it is the process of tilling or loosening the soil around the

seedlings. This method allows for easy absorption of water and fertilizer in

the roots of the seedling for faster growth.

29

Two Types of fertilizer:

  • Inorganic – artificial fertilizer made from chemicals (liquid, soluble and granular form).

  • Organic – natural fertilizer from decayed matter, animals and other natural sources.

30

Benefits of Using Organic Fertilizer

  • It is environment friendly.

  • It adds more nutrients to the soil.

  • It is safe to use.

  • It is economical.

  • It helps the development of roots, flowers, shoots, and fruits.

  • It balances the soil ph. Soil pH is the degree of acidity and alkalinity of the soil. Pulverized eggshell, oyster shell, bone meal, and any lime will neutralize the acidity of the soil.

31

Examples of Organic Fertilizer:

1. Humus - comes from decayed matters from plants and

animals mixed with soil

2. Manure - comes from animal waste such as livestock and

poultry waste

3. Green Manure - comes from decayed plants

4. Compost - comes from decomposed biodegradable waste pit

5. Compost pit - composting by digging pit keeping compost

underground

32

Examples of Organic Fertilizer:

6. Basket compost - composting home garbage in container

7. Compost heap - a compost pile

8. Vermicompost - comes from the waste of vermi (earthworm)

9. Liquid fertilizer - made from juice of plants and

vermicompost through the process of

concoction (allows the juice to decompose

with red sugar/molasses in a container)

33

Ways of Preparing Organic Fertilizer:

  • Dig a compost pit usually at the back of the yard.

  • Build a shelter to protect the pile from rain measuring at least 2 meters by 3 or 4 meters.

  • Collect and prepare all compost materials.

  • Pile a layer of grass and kitchen leftover about 12-15 cm thick to cover the area.

  • Level the area. Pile the second layer of animal manure about 5-8 cm.

  • Thicken layer over the first layer.

  • Make other layers like the first two layers until the pile reaches 1 1⁄2 meters.

  • Sprinkle with water to make it moist.

  • Cover the top with banana leaves.

  • Provide breathers like bamboo hole in the middle of the pile.

  • Compost will be ready after 3 months.

The following factors must be considered in marketing and selling fruits and seedlings.

  1. Market Price – The price of the product depends on the current price in the market and if the quality of fruits is better than the average, they can be sold at a very good price.

40

The following factors must be considered in marketing and selling fruits and seedlings.

  1. Location of the market – Selling price of fruits increases with an addition of the cost of transportation. It is recommended to sell them at the nearest market to

    lessen transportation cost.

  2. Consumption period – Fruits in the market are sold at different degrees of ripeness depending on the consumer’s intended purpose.

Subject | Subject

Some text here about the topic of discussion

41

Methods of selling Fruits:

1. Retailing - is selling the product from the farm directly to the consumers.

2. Use of a middleman – also called traders. They buy the products from the farm and resell these to retailers or small stores in the market.

3. Selling in the farm – Buyers go directly to the farm to buy. Prices in the farm are usually cheaper because farmers do not need to transport their products to the market.

4. Selling through Contracts – Contracts are usually done by manufacturing companies when there is a need for a big volume of products.

5. Selling through Cooperatives – Cooperatives are non-profitable organizations of workers. They own and manage the organization and patronize the products

sold by their organization.
