What food tells us about culture?

​Today's objective:

At the end of the lesson, students will be able to identify what modal verbs are, by reading a text comprehensively, expressing their point of view, analysing examples.

​Read the following text and answer the TRUE OR FALSE questions below.

​1. The cuisine of every country represents its cultural identity. T / F

2. When immigrants move to new places, cooking with new ingredients preserve their identity. T / F

3. Some people open restaurants with traditional food. T / F

4.Most of ingredients are never available in other countries. T / F

Modal verbs​

Modal verbs give a special context or intention to a normal sentence when it is added. They are functions of language. Let's do a quick review.​

We use to express a formal request/permission AND a strong possibility for an event or action to happen

Modal verb May

• I may finish my report before 6 pm. It's 5 p.m. and I have one page left only to write.​

​

• Boss, may I leave this office soon? My mom needs to be taken to hospital ad I have to take her there​

It is used to express obligation and certainty.

Modal verb: MUST

​

• ​You must remain silent when the boss is giving the report during the meeting.

• He must be very happy with the salary rise.​

It is used to give recomendations, solutions, advice, from a persona point of view

​

Modal Verb:

SHOULD​

• You shouldn't read books with the lights off.

• We should me more tolerant and respectfull towards others opinions​

You use it to give recommendations or solutions to others, but from an ethical or social perspective. However, should and ought to are used to give advice indistinctively.

​​Modal verb OUGHT TO

It is used to express like a warning to a person.

​

It is always used in past (had); its contraction is 'd.​
