Modal verbs​

Modal verbs give a special context or intention to a normal sentence when it is added. They are functions of language. Let's do a quick review.

We use to express a formal request/permission AND a strong possibility for an event or action to happen

  • I may finish my report before 6 pm. It's 5 p.m. and I have one page left only to write.​

It is used to express obligation and certainty.

Modal verb: MUST

  • ​You must remain silent when the boss is giving the report during the meeting.

  • He must be very happy with the salary rise.​

It is used to give recomendations, solutions, advice, from a persona point of view

You use it to give recommendations or solutions to others, but from an ethical or social perspective. However, should and ought to are used to give advice indistinctively.
