The Earth has 3 main layers:

• Crust

• Mantle

• Core

Layer 1: The Crust

Crust

• The surface of the Earth

• The thinnest layer of the Earth

• Made of soild rocks

Earth Layers

• The layer of Earth that we interact with

• "Litho" meaning stone in Greek

• Think "Lithosphere: It rocks to live here​"

• ​Forms the tectnoic plates that we live on

• Made mainly of granite​

• Made mainly of basalt

Layer 2: The Mantle

Mantle

• Divided into two main layers: The Upper and The Lower Mantle

• Mostly solid rock but it does contain molten rock or magma

• Makes up 85% of the Earth's mass

• Contains the Lithosphere and the Asthenosphere

• ​The Lithosphere floats on top of the Asthenosphere

• ​Most made of solid rock with areas of molten or "plastic rock" (lava)

• "Asthens"​ means weak in Greek

• Think: Asthenosphere: Fear the molten rock here

Core

• Divided into two main layers: The Outer Core and the Inner Core

• Contains both a liquid and a solid layer

• Also referred to as the "NiFe" layer

Earth's Layers

• The only liquid layer

• Made mostly of liquid iron and nickel where it gets the name "NiFe" from

• ​This layer creates the Earth's magnetic field
