​Project atlas was supposed to be a ICBM designed to fly over 500,000

miles to its target​.

​It ended up becoming a project to launch heavy sattelites into orbit.

the largest atlas rocket before 1970 was the mighty CS Centaur, Capable of carrying a payload of 20 tons to the moon or 10 tons into mars orbit!! It was launched from november 1961 to 1964. However,

All atempts have failed.​

In 1959, the original Atlas was made, simply called the ATLAS. ATLAS had two engines, one on the left, and the other on the right. on its first flight, it flew in all directions like crazy, then exploded!!! but eventually,

ATLAS made a succesful flight. then they started flying monkeys into space with an improved and stronger atlas of almost the same model.

then, in 1962, John Glenn was the first amarican in orbit, in fact riding in a Mercury capsule simply attached to a 2-stage atlas rocket!​
