When the enemies of Rome began getting too close to the city and it seemed the capital city would be conquered in the next few decades, Emperor Constantine moved the capital out of the city of Rome to the city of Byzantium. Once he moved to Byzantium, he renamed the city Constantinople.

Constantinople

  • Trade was easier which made the Romans wealthier.

    • Byzantium/Constantinople was located between two major seas, the Mediterranean and the Blakc Sea.

  • Easier to defend

    • In addition to having major seas on two sides of the city making land invasion impossible from those areas, Constantine had not one, but a series of large walls built to protect the city from invasion.

Why relocate the capital city?

22

media

The relocation helped the Roman culture survive for over another 1,000 years. When gunpowder made cannons possible, the walls no longer protected Constantinople and the city was conquered by the Ottomans.

On the next few slides, you will watch a video talking about how it was conquered, taking a trip to its most famous building, the Haggia Sophia. Be ready to answer questions
