Probability, Chance and Odds

By natalie richardson

2

Probability

Recall that Probability is the ratio of favorable outcomes to possible outcomes.

#possible outcomes

3

Probability

  • If we spin the spinner, the probability that it stops on 1 is 1/4.

  • We can express the probability as ¼ or 0.25 or 25%.

  • The COMPLEMENT of this event is the spinner not stopping on 1.

  • This probability is ¾ or 0.75 or 75%.

6

Odds

  • Another way to express the likelihood of an event is as ODDS.

  • The ODDS is the ratio of favorable to unfavorable outcomes.

7

Odds

  • If we spin the spinner, the odds that it stops on 1 are 1 to 3.

  • We can express the odds as 1 to 3 or 1:3.

  • Odds express the relationship between an event and its complement.

  • Although we do not write odds as a fraction, we always reduce the relationship.

  • For example, “getting heads twice” with two flips of a coin is a compound event.

  • A compound event is composed of two or more simple events.
