​The twelve months in Islamic calendar

The Islamic Calendar consists of 12 months and is based on the position and phases of the moon

Most Islamic months start with sighting ​of the new moon

​

​The months are approximately 29 to 30 days long.

Each month has it own unique meaning and event !​

​

​

​Muharram​ [sacred]

1st month

Forbidden

Fighting or arguing during Muharram is forbidden ! ​

As Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar , we should start it with love and kindness to our friends and family !​

​Safar

second month​

Void ​or travel

Allah ​commanded Muslim to go to madina in this month

​Rabi-ul-awwal

3rd month​

The first spring ​

It is an extremely joyous month for Muslims as the earth sprouts with new life , this is also the month our Prophet [p.b.u.h] was born and also the month He passed away returned to Allah [s.w.t]

​Rabi-ul-thani

4th month​

Second spring

Many Muslims spend this month mourning because a lot of people who were special to our Prophet and Muslim Ummah passed ​away

​Jammad-ul-awwal

5th month​

First parched land or freeze

Relates to frozen​ weather causing parched land

​

​

​Jammad-al-thani

6th month

Last parched land

​Prophet Muhammad [p.b.u.h] and khadija [r.a]'s Daughter was born in the month

She passed away in this month as well as Abu Bakr [r.a] which makes it a month of mourning for many Muslims​

​Rajab [sacred]

7th month

Honour or​ Respect

It is a very sacred month , Fighting is haram in this month as well

Muslims complete their Umrah in this month​

​sha'ban

8th month

Scattered

It is​ considered the month of Prophet [p.b.u.h]

In the old days Muslims would scatter and go look for water

Now , Muslims spend sha'ban preparing for Ramadan​

​Ramadan

9th​ month

Heat

Muslim spend Ramadan Fasting and praying to cleanse their mind their soul and body ​

​Shawwal

10th month

Raised

A celebratory and Joyful month as the first 3 days of it is Eid-ul-fitr

lots of food , gift , prayers and love is exchanged in Shawwal​

​Dhul al-qada [sacred]

11th month

Month of truce

Sacred month during which Allah f​orbids violence so that Muslims can make their way to Mecca to commence their Hajj safely

​

​Dhul-hijjah [sacred]

12th month

P​ilgrimage ​

Muslims carry out their ​due of Hajj during this month

​Day of Arafah is also in this month , the day Allah finalised Islam

Eid-ul​-Adha [qurbani] is also in this Sacred month

​

​Four sacred months:

• Muharram

• Rajab

• Dhul al-qada

• Dhul-Hajj

​Sacred months in which your Good deeds will weigh heavy as well as your bad deed
