BOX PLOTS

What is a box plot?

• a box and whisker plot (aka a box plot)

• shows the five numbers of summary: minimum, lower quartile (Q1), median (Q2) , upper quartile (Q3), and maximum.

To find the Median (Q2)..make sure your data is re-ordered from lowest to highest...then find the middle value of the data..

• let's look at the following example

When the number of data values is an even number...find the mean of the two middle values as seen in the previous example.

WHAT IS A DOT PLOT?

• a number line long enough to include all the number in a given sample.

• showing dots over the position corresponding to each value.
